Choosing Natural Raffia

On often reads the same words on a basket: "raffia", "straw", "palm leaf", "raffia effect", "elephant grass", "cenchrus purpureus"...
However, these are not the same fibers, nor the same supply chains, nor the same hands.
Here are the six materials you will encounter - and the one we choose at MAD house.

Natural Raffia

When we say "raffia," we're talking about this fiber. Originating from Madagascar, it is hand-harvested from the young fronds of the Raphia farinifera palm, without felling the tree, then sun-dried and crocheted by Malagasy artisans, who pass down their expertise from generation to generation.

Its natural plant resin gives it flexibility and resistance. Like any natural fiber, it requires some care – and develops a patina over time, without losing its nobility.

Elephant grass straw

"Elephant grass" and "Cenchrus purpureus" refer to the same plant: a tropical grass originating from northern Ghana. Its stalks are cut, sun-dried, and then hand-braided by women in the Bolgatanga region. The hollow stem provides good structural integrity but remains susceptible to impact and humidity.

Cereal straw

When a bag is simply described as "straw", it most often refers to dried stalks of wheat, rye, or oats. An agricultural co-product originating from Europe and the Mediterranean basin, harvested after threshing, dried in bundles, then braided by hand or industrially. A rigid and inelastic fiber, it absorbs moisture and becomes brittle over time.

Palm Leaf

"Palm leaf" is a broad term: it encompasses several species (doum, dwarf palm, etc.), native to North Africa and tropical areas. The leaves are cut, split into strips, sun-dried, then hand-braided according to local traditions. It is a wide and fibrous material that offers good raw strength but limited finesse.

Braided Paper

Behind the term "paper straw" lies an industrial production process, often based in Asia. Cellulose pulp is transformed into paper sheets, cut into thin strips, twisted into thread, sometimes waxed, and then woven by machine or by hand. Without long plant fibers or natural resin, its resistance depends on the waxing and remains limited in water.

"Raffia Effect"

"Raffia effect" describes an appearance, not a material. Industrial textile production, using viscose, polyester, or recycled synthetic yarns, machine-knitted to imitate raffia. A vegetal appearance, but a plastic manufacturing process, not a plant weave.
Strength varies depending on the quality of the yarn and knit, often reinforced by an inner lining.
